After a brief review on the popular blog, You Aint No Picasso, the interest in Jason the Swamps slow beats, lazy strumming, and lo-fi ethics seemed to grow overnight. With its spacious layers, the self titled album expands on what came before, with spectacular results.
The album willingly glides through Panda Bear pop with plinky plonk keyboard arrangements, to tunes that wouldn’t look out of place on a Paul Simon record, all that is missing is the African choir. Although, with the layers upon layers, you often get the feel that they are actually present!
This self titled release also features Robby Massey (dessktop) supplying xylophone at the end of I Can Live Again, and Jessi Lively sings backing vocals on the gorgeous final track, There Was Light, which helps crystalise Jason the Swamps position, as producing some of the finest lo-fi pop around.

A FOEM contact has told us today about a rumour (edit: it is no rumour anymore now) that Neuton, one of the biggest music distributors, would be due to announce its insolvency on Monday, December 1, 2008. Original text: “(…) I just got the bad news today that our vinyl distributor, Neuton, will make an official announcement on Monday that they have filed for insolvency (…)” After the collapse of the japanese distributor Cisco, the whole label scene and the distributors were under extreme pressure.
We asked again and this was the reply: “We’d rather not forward the private emails, however I can say we’ve heard the news indirectly from two sources that have been in contact with Neuton at the top level. Additionally I can tell you that a US distributor sent out an email to their labels alerting to the problem with Neuton, and to expect more news soon.
I think it’s safe to say that you have heard “reliable rumors” from music industry contacts that Neuton is in trouble and will make an official announcement regarding their status this coming week.”
Neuton works with many top electronic labels, distributing music for diverse labels including Four Twenty, Tresor, Vakant, or Perlon and has worked in the past with labels like Bpitch control , Playhouse, Klang or M_nus.
Although the news is as yet unconfirmed by Neuton (we also asked them), this would be a terrible day for the music industry, and FOEM as a community of vinyl lovers is sad to hear the news. Neuton is a source of wonderful music! All this would be just one more step in the domination of the internet in new music, as rising mp3 sales continue to turn the music industry upside down.

For his first release on Tasty Bytes, Push Rec+Play takes no detours with DVDA, a powerfull and visceral electro track. A heavy distorted bassline sits on top of dry and raw percussions, developping into a climax that will explode even the most jaded dancers.
DVDA is supported by a remix by Alice & The Serial Numbers who takes out her guitar and injects a good dose of rock in the original, and by an Omni remix, who revisits the track with more square 8 bit sounds that are still just as mean.
ALONE TOGETHER
“THE BEGINNING OF HUMAN”
(IF? RECORDS – IF057)
We have a knock-out release this week, and it’s the debut EP from Japanese cut-up/IDM/broken piano artist, Alone Together.
Also known as Yuki Ota, he’s one of the truly innovative (nice) guys here in Tokyo, and even Toshiyuki Yasuda thinks Yuki’s unique and crazy. We consider his stuff wild, scattered, amazing, eccentric, and way way cool—precisely IF?’s cup o’ tea.
Some people are already comparing his music with Yasuda, Si Begg, Cassetteboy, Dsico, Kid 606 and Luke Vibert.
In other words it’s bloody brilliant.
Yuki remains deceptively low-key about his occasionally madcap electronic sounds. “I am a broken piano player,” he says on his MySpace site. “I practice Broken Piano theory in Alone Together.”
