After just over a year of putting out EPs on Alt, we are very pleased to present the first full length compilation, Android Lubricated Tech-Funk. The collection of tracks represents everything Alt is about, from deep experimental weirdness to peak-time dancefloor business. There are tracks on offer from nearly all the artists we have released since the beginning, and we are very pleased to welcome some new faces. You’ll recognise some of them, and may have never heard of others, but they all share the same twisted vision for where house, techno, electronica (and any other form of music) can go in the future.

Leif kicks things off with the mighty ‘Pushing Hands’, a loosely knitted bongo freakout that keeps the lounge-jazz vibe he is known for, but pushes his handling of percussion to a new level. Tone Def’s remix of Daniel Schneider’s ‘Miesekatze’ track takes a very different route, stripping everything back to it’s barest elements, with a trademark grooving beast of a bassline propelling the beat along. New to Alt, Le Jockey turns the pace up with a delightfully mental track full of pulsating techno rhythm, choppy micro-samples and a healthy dose of humour. Donk Boys take their sound deeper than usual on ‘Avgrundens Harskare’ (which means “lord of the abyss” apparently) for a sinister track rich in detail and melody.

Tone Def’s latest offering is pure four to the floor funk, all nagging hi-hats and quirky ticks riding over a granite bottom end. Tom Ellis returns to the Alt fold with a textbook bumping, grinding house cut full of tricksy rhythms and that unmistakable Trimsound funk. Just when you thought it was safe on the floor, Daniel Schneider throws a hefty curveball in the shape of ‘Ask That Bitch’ that rains down gallons of beautifully choreographed sounds. J-Lab pulls things back with ‘Somewhere’, carrying that trademark melodic moodiness that permeates his tracks before blossoming into an electro-flecked party monster. Closing down the party, Storlon’s penchant for trippy soundscapes goes to the next level on ‘Oenologia’, possessing an immense level of sound design.

Under certain circumstances a bull equals a cucumber’ (an anthropological saying)

Being basically the brainchild of Austrian massage therapist Norbert Bieber, ZAUS was formed in 1995 as a musical collective open to all forms of audible expression. Consequently, the music of ZAUS oscillates between minimal and metal, ranging from spontaneous improvisation to organically grown conglomerates of multifarious sounds as well as from highly scientific concepts to cryptical nonsense.

The standard procedure of producing a ZAUS track is fairly simple:
Unsuspecting musicians are frequently lured into the recording studio where they first of all are going to be sedated by mind-numbing substances, then involved into some highly absurd conversation and finally gently forced to contribute spontaneously to the recording by treating their instruments in a way mostly not familiar to them. After a couple of such events, the output is carefully mixed up in Norbert’s brain & food processor and out comes the unique music of ZAUS. Besides these doubtful activities, ZAUS has been producing music for performances, theater, film and TV with constantly changing line-ups.

‘Congregation’, containing tracks recorded between 2004 and 2008, is an illuminating journey through spaced out funk rocktronica, quirky pop interpretation, dark sordid grooves and complex electroacoustic soundscapes.
Track 10 is an unedited 11 minutes excerpt from the socio-acoustic live performance “SONIC MAZE”, premiered in collaboration with jazz actionists k3 in Salzburg in March 2008.

Participating in the Congregation were: Thomas Dinnobl, Stefan Wuketich, Roman Kovacs, Herbert Koenighofer, Silvio Sinzinger, Simone Beer, Martha Jeitler, Voka, Andy Collett, Ing. Loop, Rokko Ramirez, Klaus Kircher & Robert Kainar

[RRR094] Tropical Australian Stinger Research Unit – Grapefruit Gun

TASRU - Grapefruit Gun

This two track offering is the latest release from Minnesota’s TASRU. The brainchild behind this project, a certain Thomas O’Neill Grathwol said that he didn’t want to wait for an entire album to be ready before putting something new out on Rack & Ruin… and boy are we thankful!

If the title track “Grapefruit Gun” is anything to go by, then his as-yet-untitled next album is going to be one to look out for! The distinctive TASRU qualities are still there, obscure film dialogue, foot tapping beats, and a tune that will stick in your head, and have you whistling along to in no time. The “B side” is a tweaked out remix of a new song called “The Stranger”.

Grathwol’s DIY ethic is still there in abundance, however, these two tracks seem to have the polish to take them to a newer level. A recent review likened his previous offering “An F in Health” to an early Baby Bird record, which did seem to be a fitting description to that album. “An F in Health” was full of ideas, outtakes, and was a precursor for what was to come. Well, what was waiting in the wings has now arrived.
