[mfm10] Sister Overdrive – Retroversion

Thursday, December 30th, 2010

Selected Recordings 2001-2004

The first light of the day seen through a dirty old shaft in Kypseli. A morning breeze carrying the smell of humans during a bus ride from Kaniggos square to Patisia. The roar of a thousand motors heard from an office on the 12th floor, while the buildings in the city center, painted orange by the pollution-screened light of the evening sun, seem to be abandoned for decades. A glimpse of the sunset right before a big iron door closes behind you, as you descend into a gray basement in Ampelokipi.

Sister Overdrive is a neo-romanticist in Athens city. Each piece of Retroversion consists of minimalist melodies layered on top of each other, like dreams for the future, formed gradually from hopes and ambitions, and syncopated, rasping rhythms, which remind me of how the dreams of people are crushed by other people in a colorless urban background. And how they are made again.

[alw042] Peter Clamat – Daheim und Unterwegs

Wednesday, December 22nd, 2010

Auflegware finished the year 2010 with a great release. Peter Clamat pops a cork with his album ‘Daheim und Unterwegs’. He samples himself nearly to death, just to reincarnate with a “rave” empathy which forces everybody to listen and rave it up. Full stop!.

[RRR197] Vlantis – Urotanki EP

Tuesday, December 21st, 2010

Vlantis - Urotanki EP

Vlantis is the solo project from Joe Jacobs, a USA native who moved to Japan back in 2006. Finding bands was a difficult experience, and so this led to Jacobs collaborating with individuals to bring unique diversity to each of his Vlantis recordings.

His previous release (which can be heard on was a dark ethnic instrumental album, which is perhaps the polar opposite of Urotanki, his first Rack & Ruin release.

Urotanki is a wonderfully upbeat fun pop EP, where Jacobs collaborates with a Japanese vocalist and an exceptional guitar player, producing this extraordinary release which will sit proudly as our final release of 2010.

Musically it is a rollercoaster, high energy keyboard anthems with cutesy Japanese female vocals, often interspersed with Jacobs cutting in – not unlike Bjork and Einar in the Sugarcubes. 2010 may be over, but it has gone out with a bang not a whimper.

Selected Works 06-09

Off Land – Selected Works 06-09

16 past works including a few rare and previously unreleased tracks. Free for the first 500 downloads!

“These pieces were hand-picked to showcase some of my favorite tracks from the various Off Land netlabel releases put out in the past. This two disc compilation of work finished during a four year window pulls from output that spans two recording cycles. The first recording cycle unintentionally started in 2001 but didn’t officially start until 2004 when Off Land formed. This recording cycle which lasted between four to seven years finished in 2007 with “Encounter Point”. The second recording cycle which ultimately produced the full length album “Blue Narration” (Enpeg) was much shorter, only spanning the length of three years. This release includes two previously unreleased compositions. For the first time all of these tracks can be listened to in the lossless audio format of your choice.”

d’incise – Rivages sur l’antipode (12” LP)

d'incise - Rivages sur l'antipode (12'' LP)

LP @ 33 RPM [ 35:50 min]
2010 ini.itu #1001
250 copies, hand numbered

Composed on a special request from ini.itu, “Rivages sur l’antipode” (“shores on the opposite side of the earth”) is his first vinyl LP and is based on similar archival material as the one used by Francisco López in his stunning “untitled #228”. Nonetheless, d’incise has achieved radically different results, combining digitally-processed textures, microsamples and humming harmonics rippling out over broken rhythms. He has collaged the least obvious bits of gamelan, many grainy soundbytes from Jakarta, Makassar, Bandung and Yogjakarta into a kaleidoscopic reinterpretation of these shattered fragments. Sudden transitions, alinear progressions and melancholic, sprawling, autumnal atmospheres reveal a very personal soundworld.

This LP could evoke Kim Hiorthoy on sedatives under moist tropics, or an alter-ego of Burial in a futuristic decaying Jakarta won back by the jungle, with hints of digital crispiness from Kid606 période Mille Plateaux; a touch of the microsampling of Akufen, all of this marinated into the experiments in folk deterritorialisation made by some Ritornell artists such as Random_Inc / Sebastian Meissner.

Icing on the cake, this LP was mastered by James Plotkin in Philadelphia.
