[FbL009] Landcrash – The Silhouette that the Leaves

Landcrash - The Silhouette that the Leaves make Against the Sky

A journey is a beautiful thing. In most cases the journey is as important as the destination it takes you, or the final copy of something you create. The silhouette that the leaves make against the sky takes you through a number of journeys over the course of twenty-two minutes, and each one of these is breathtaking.

I decided to go on an expedition of my own, accompanied by the music of Daniel Hopkins aka Landcrash. I began by walking the streets of my town without knowledge of where I was going or how I was going to get there, and as each track played out before me like a mini narrative I felt compelled to write about the stories that came to my mind, illustrated by this release.

In the distance I could hear the echoing thud of tools against wood, a carpenter slowly shaping his creation one knock at a time, guiding himself through a creative process which would end in something timeless. Walking further I pictured a young child with his head held high in awe of the passing clouds, on a journey of his own. As the final seconds of the record fade away I felt I had come far enough and my own short journey was over.

In listening to this release, Landcrash has illustrated to me pockets of discovery and creation. And so I leave you with one suggestion, wherever and whenever your next journey takes you, let The silhouette that the leaves make against the sky accompany that journey, it will make it all the more sweeter.

[modisti18] Ángel Faraldo – Scelsi Remix: 7 Mantras

Thursday, December 16th, 2010

Ángel Faraldo - Scelsi Remix: 7 Mantras

“Scelsi Remix: 7 Mantras” was composed in April 2010 as a collection of seven short quadraphonic interludes to interweave a monographic concert program of the ensemble S@x 21 (saxophonists Pablo Coello and Rafa Yebra) with music of the Italian composer Giacinto Scelsi (1905-1988).

The 7 Mantras are related to the 7 Chackras of the Hindu tradition, each one associated with a different color whose light frequency has been transposed down to the audible range to serve as the fundamental tone to each of the 7 short pieces here presented.

For this release, I prepared them together, so they now constitute a single, gapless piece. In order to remain as faithful as possible to the original composition and to the space in which it was played, this release is mixed down to stereo using binaural technology, therefore it is best rendered when listening to it with headphones.

[RB091] Shinobu Nemoto – Melting Loop Trip

Shinobu Nemoto - Melting Loop Trip

Shinobu Nemoto is a sound-artist from Kanagawa, Japan. You might know “Summons of Shining Ruins”, his solo-guitar project or “Dark Side of The Audio System “, a tape-loop-experiment. Under his real name Shinobu Nemoto mainly releases guitar-improvisations and field-recordings. He also runs the label “MOUFU-ROKUON” and did collaborations with Brain Grainger, Jason Adams and Danielle Demos.

“Melting Loop Trip” is a collection of sixteen loops, each loop between six and thirteen minutes long. Each loop is a beautiful analog picture. Very athmospheric, very warm and very, very meditative. You can fall back into a cloudy bed of hushed noises, shimmering melodies and wonderful echo-structures.

You can go ahead, pick your favorite loop and listen to it on repeat. Or you can listen to the complete release from track to track. In addition to Shinobu’s musical output illustrator Kati Meden created an artwork-concept for the complete release as well as for every single loop based on her colour-alphabet.

Chris Fortier – Despegue Remixes [OUT NOW]

Wednesday, December 15th, 2010

In 2010, we partnered with European friends at website for a remix contest for Chris Fortier’s “Despegue” song. After a long and agonizing process of trying to narrow down to one winner, we discovered and heard a great number of strong candidates. It was a fantastic surprise to have such high quality, and also, creative interpretations. There were hundreds of submissions, but within we found some truly great highlights that I thought were worthy of showcasing on the label as well.

This is a very proud release with so many different types of sounds represented from all the corners of electronic music.

[RRR196] VA – Jingle Bell Rack

Wednesday, December 15th, 2010

[RRR196] Various Artists - Jingle Bell Rack

Christmas sure has that certain knack of bringing people together, and from all corners of the globe, and from all varieties of the Rack & Ruin musical spectrum.

Vlantis, a RnR newcomer starts off proceedings with the joyous, fast, fun, frenetic opener “Hush Child, The Snow is Gone”, a track based on one which Vlantis (Joe Jacobs) wrote with his friend Chris Ward at an earlier date. Grand Pocket Orchestra are next up, with another ridiculously catchy number entitled “Yum Yum”, their coming year will be one to watch with interest.

We slow things down a litlte with a gorgeous T Bear ballad, before The Macadamia Brothers, who has featured on all of the other xmas compilations takes on the Bing Crosby classic “You’re all I want for Christmas”. The Crayons are next up, with a festive instrumental (and a special message to the listeners), before turning to the countryfied humourous storytelling of Oklahoma’s Brad Fielder, the lyrics here will surely raise a smile as you glug on some gluhwein.

Gnomefoam showcases his new sound, ahead of 2011′s first release “Squirrelcore”, mixing his trademark cut and paste ideas with Yorkshire rap! Then we see the welcome return of the stunning Dean 01 (formerly known as Dean Angel).

Vincent Lillis shifts things into his psychedlic realm with the delicious “Christmas with a shotgun”, and the Irish link continues with the outstanding Western Homes and No Monster Club (featuring Cloud Castle Lake), who curated last years Xmas compilation, and whose popularity seems to be souring as the months pass. Finally we close with the Mariah Carey classic, “All I want for Christmas is you” with added auto-tune, from Teacups.

Merry Christmas one and all.
