The bad news first, this Ep is most likely going to be the last solo effort of Laika’s Child, as London has joined forces with Californian shoegazers “Life in 24 frames” as their new keyboardist.

Now onto the better news. “The Great Sacremento Fire”, shows a real blend of where Laika’s Child have gone in the past couple of years. London was aiming for a more ‘grown up sound’, and it is a joy that this growing experience can be shared by us all.

One thing Laika’s Child aren’t, and now perhaps never will be, is a “singles band”, when trying to choose a track which showcases the new EP it was not an easy task. All five tracks have real beauty within, but the true beauty lies when listening to them in order – tracks merge, grow, and build in memorable ways.

If this is indeed Laika’s Childs final farewell, then I’m sure in will leave London will be no regrets.

Diametral Records comes up with the digital Sublabel „Diametral Express” and its focusing on deep and dubby techno sounds. The aim is to support young national and international artists in electronic music.

The first release is produced by “Yuuki Hori” an interesting Newcomer from Japan who has already released on different  labels such as Cupido, Ipologica or Redflux. The “Fragile EP” represents three different interpretations of Yuukis musical experience of the passed years.

The first track “Fragile” is a more technoid one with some really fine arranged loops, interessting percussions and versatile deep synth-sounds including a great summer spirit.

“Eclipse” takes part in very deep sounds, maybe some people would say its minimal, but it isn’t! A compostion of a playful bassline and deep soundscapes with a nice detroit-flavour. You have to decide if its wet or dry, but for sure its the right one for every afterhour.

The last track is called “the other side of mine” and shows Yuukis passion for ambient sounds, deep basses and broken beats. A very chilling and hypnotising track reflecting the artists whole spectrum.

As small bonus DR provides you a nice ambient-intro “Rain” done by Delusion!

Freekflame (Space Disco Remix) conjures musical images of a night out in the urban jungle. A simple but effective four to the floor beat, decorated with subtle blips and electronic buzzings starts the piece, soon accompanied by floating watery pads which bubble up from underneath, lifting your head to the night sky. This isn´t so much shoegazing as stargazing as Audioglider demonstrates his technical mastery and unerring ability to tell a beautiful, scenic and wordless story.

Remix number one comes from Cid Inc, otherwise known as Henri Hurtig, who was named one of Beatport’s best progressive house artists of 2009. Fusing progressive and tech house with elements from other styles he has enjoyed releases through many well-known labels such as Inkfish, TrivalVision, Global Underground and Bedrock, as well as completing remixes for the likes of John Digweed, Pole Folder, Mason and D-Nox & Beckers. Oskar Hallbert is a Swedish composer who makes minimal music; tranquil melodies, documentary field recordings and the warm hiss you get from old microphones, casette tapes and an out of date mp3-player. You might know him from his former online releases on Zymogen or Rain Music. He has also released physical albums on small underground lables around the world, most recent on U.K. based Heat death.

The EP “doodling” consists of 5 tracks and is 12 minutes and 12 seconds long. All songs are like little folk-miniatures for instance containing simple guitar-figures, a toy keyboard and field recordings. The feeling of the EP reminds me of old photographs found in the attic, with buckled corners, covered with dust, and with faded colouration. They are like pieces of frozen time, they tell a fraction of a story.

Idea was to make linear photographic music. Andrei Tarkovsky defined film as sculpting in time. Music on this album stands as an attempt of opposite process, reducing series of impressions to inner image – to inner “photograph”. First piece is titled “EXP. Bardo.Vertep.”, and it was inspired by Olga Tokarczuk’s story from her book “Gra na wielu bebenkach” (”Playing on Many Drums”). Second and third piece were inspired by places alongside railroad from Belgrade to Subotica. “EXP. Kroz prozor voza – svetla na horizontu” is placed from first lights on horizon when aproaching Novi Sad, to spot where last ones disapear. “EXP. Srne” is located in plains between Vrbas and Backa Topola where often, in early mornings, I see roe deers. They are always on the same side of railtracks, it seems that they don’t cross over. Final piece, “EXP. Moja pesma ce ti biti smesna” is longer and rearanged version of music recorded in 2008 for same titled short film by Milica Jovcic.

Only instrument on this album is electric guitar. Sound was processed through effect pedals.

Album is released as limited edition CD.

Fuck Explorer is a new exciting buzz band featuring our very own Palz (Slothbear), and some other likeminded individuals ready to unleash their noise on the unsuspecting world that we live in.

This self titled debut EP contains four tracks which range from the in your face psychedelic mashups “What Makes U Grow?” and “La Bamba” (nonchalantly unphased by the clipping), to the pop and accessible stylings of “White Minx You Know?”, and the ever-twisting “Vishnu Purana”.

It sounds clear to me that Fuck Explorer are a band not afraid to deliver the unexpected. “White Minx You Know?” could quite easily sit amongst the tracks made by Palz other band for instance. However, the other three tracks are ones where Fuck Explorer seem keen to explore less accessible routes.

Hungarian The Bee comes with fresh sound this year, 4 tracks of Go To The Playground is more developed than his last release, AeTech004, showing that Bee is moving forward with the actual styles. ‘Blues Company’ is a modern techno piece (with crazy cello sampling), written for the dancefloors, isn’t it? 2nd track ‘Minifunk’ is more minimal-electro like, but it comes to an end with hard, industrial noises, nice backround sounds. ‘Slow Tech Fusion’ is varied but mellow work. The closing ‘Travelling’ is a good piece for this summer, organic like a coctail, cool like the ice in it.

Straight from Cologne, we proudly debut with our first release on Technology Gap 001, with some deep as its gets straight up House Music acompaning your personal summer madness. Anyone wondering what Oliver Koch’s Breitbankater projects all about need only turn to the EPs opening cut, “Warm and Wet,” wherein the Cologne-based producer proclaims, “I want the best for you / So everything I do / is house music.” Yep, Technology Gap 001 is house music all right, and a particularly fine sampling of it too. The aforementioned “Warm and Wet” immediately declares itself an EP high point the moment it’s thumping bass pulse kicks in. Sleekly designed, the cut begins with a tight minimal swing that swells into a jacking house fireball while serving up six minutes of chunky chords and cracking snares. The second track, “Wonder Why,” tips the balance in a slightly more soulful deep house direction when Monojoe spreads an exuberant vocal over Breitbandkaters lush backing. Warm chords and a sweetly grooving pulse provide a soft cushion for some old-school cymbal patterns and a radiant synth hook in the smooth stormer. Adopting a slightly more atmospheric approach, with House Group of the Hour, Morning Factory winds up the EP with a trippy remix of “Warm and Wet” which finds Koch?s vocal drifting through the slow-building mix in a semi-entranced daze. Lovers of classy deep house should no doubt find much to admire about Breitbankater’s three-tracker. Go hunt, its good for you!

It’s been a year since we last heard from Vincent Lillis, and now with one track on the summer compilation, and this here his second full length it is safe to say that Lillis is back.

Neb Nub is descibed by Lillis as a concept album. “Neb and Nub are alien brothers, featured on the front cover of the album. They travel across the universe fighting each other. One day they land on Earth and their on-going battle causes chaos. They are like Yin and Yang”. Lillis, ends this with “True story”.

Contained within Neb Nub are 23 tracks, recorded between the period of 2007-2010, “Hearts No Good” and “Institute” being the oldest songs on Lillis’ repetoire. Musically this is verging more towards the weird electronic oddess, rather than the guitars of “Purple Magpie”.

This album is a little dark, a little odd, a little insane, danceable in most parts, but enjoyable throughout.

Saito Koji continues to produce great single-track longform drone-pieces. Remember his latest release on SEM “Ocean”? Or his former works like “Beautiful” or “Candle”? He is just perfect in building up drone-loops over 30 minutes to one hour and they are never getting boring.

“Tokyo Morning Loop” is a 45-minute-piece. The loop repeats over and over in this piece but every time you listen you find another overtone, another little bit of melody you didn’t recognize before. Especially in the background-texture you’ll find variations and shiftings due to the listening.

My recommendation is to put up your headphones, close your eyes and relax.

Huunter is an artistic pseudonym created as an umbrella under which Lloyd Bourne publishes all of his visual and musical endeavors. Huunter’s debut album, Shantih, is a minimalist classical album dedicated to the life of his late grandmother. After the sucessful release of Shantih Huunter returned to his home studio to concentrate writing a new album and a new artistic direction.

Observing crowds of people respond so viscerally to four-on-the-floor beats of modern dance music, Huunter was inspired to create a similar effect using only classical instruments. After months composing and arranging the result is The Ultraviolet Catastrophe. These four tracks take you on a forty-minute journey through avant-garde, classical and dance influenced music. The Ultraviolet Catastrophe represents a new direction for the future of Huunters music.

Some hard notes to crack.
IMAGINE a new musical instrument that can play any sound you like. Surely that would sound quite different from the stuff most musicians pump out routinely. But seriously: how about something REALLY new for a change, because that’s what this compilation is all about. Sounds you’ve never heard before. Call it ‘xenharmonic’ music (or if that’s too hard just call it ‘off key’).

The music on ‘Crack My Pitch Up‘ has a unique feel to it because it doesn’t use the familiar Western 12-tone scale. When you crack your pitches up smaller and smaller, you find many more musical options to compose with. In other words there are many surprises down the cracks of the piano keys.

The 12-tone scale exploits one fact about how we humans appreciate music; pleasant or ‘consonant’ sounds are mathematically simple. For 2 or more different pitches being played at the same time, when the ratio of their frequencies uses simple low numbers, we hear a pure and blissful harmonious sound. The 12-tone scale has many of these ratios (and it’s simple to learn and play). This fact has made the 12-tone scale a common and universal kind of harmony.

But the 12-tone scale doesn’t have anything new to express today. Because most instruments are built for 12 notes (think guitars and pianos) musicians in the West have explored this and little else. After all for some time it was expensive to build xenharmonic instruments – but now anybody can do it with a synthesizer and some software! This is definitely a fun time to be a music fan or musician.

‘Crack My Pitch Up’ is xenharmonic because it uses non-12-tone scales. If not using the traditional scales of Africa, India, Ancient Greece, the Middle East, the Far East (and everywhere else) then with something else entirely new. This album, by the way, leans firmly towards “something else entirely new!”

The musicians who contributed to the project are: Jacky Ligon, City of the Asleep, Scratchy Dubplate Crew, Carlo Serafini, Flao YG, Fature, Cameron Bobro, Paragon, Sevish and Microdub.

Alic plays a second home match on Digital Diamonds with Proper Language. A track which will blast you more than you expect because of it’s strength at the bottom, richness of emotion – feels like it makes your day as well as you wish, while the two Excizen remixes treat you very exemplary at night.

As people who have followed Rack & Ruin for a while will know, I’ve always been more of a fan of hearing what the artist makes of their release, rather than overusing phrases to try and define what it is that I am taking in. A listeners experience is unique, and ideally shouldn’t be masked by some empty words written by those who aren’t involved. With that, here are the thoughts of Teacups…

“The title-track “Songs about Yarn in B-flat” which makes up the most of “Songs about Yarn – EP” is little bits and pieces of me (Richie) throughout the last three or four years of my life. Written with no intent of being shown to others, all parts were originally created and performed on a looped violin. Being consumed by these little snippets of music which I had created loop after loop, I became interested in music composition beyond the repeating four measures.

Through the help of friends and learning everything I could about music orchestration in a very short amount of time, I was eventually able to convince the KKHS Symphonic Band to give these songs a shot. Once discovering people, a symphonic band nonetheless!, would play music I wrote, I then spent every hour working on ‘connecting’ these snippets, not having them bound by repetition yet still expressing the things I liked about the loop pedal, and then finally, writing out a song created entirely on a violin, loop pedal, and octave changer, to fit a symphonic band set up (which I might add does not have a string section), so… notation, notation, notation…”

And back to myself to sum up, this is refreshing computer generated music with two sides – SNES and N64 repeating the tracks on the previous side, in exciting wonderous ways.
