Humanitarian crisis in Somalia: the ICRC needs your help!

Hi all,

While we’re all waiting for our merry little Christmas, there are people around the world for whom this Christmas will not be as merry, unless we join our efforts with the International Red Cross.

In Somalia hundreds of thousands of people have been displaced and millions continue to depend on humanitarian assistance. The majority of the population has been overwhelmed by the combined effect of conflict, violence and natural disasters, and can no longer cope with the extreme living conditions they face.

The ICRC has launched an emergency operation with the Somali Red Crescent Society to help more than one million people directly affected by armed conflict. It runs extensive first-aid, medical and basic health-care programmes, as well as agriculture and water projects, concentrating its operational presence where armed clashes are recurrent and essential services are non-existent.

Key roles are helping internally displaced people to set up makeshift homes, delivering relief goods and food rations to the most needy, providing health care and carrying out small-scale water, agricultural and cash-for-work projects designed to restore or improve livelihoods and improve economic security in communities weakened by crises.
