The Nicole Moudaber Interview
Hi Nicole, how has 2010 been so far for you, any highlights you would like to share with us?
Amazing and still going strong. Highlights are when Pete Tong featured me as the rising star on his show with my upcoming release on INTEC “The Reason Why” and when i played with Danny Tenaglia in Beirut, i heard that DT has the “Nicole Bug” !! Also – my residency at Church On Sundays at Es Vive in Ibiza, SW4 with John Digweed and playing Space Ibiza with Carl Cox.
You grew up in Nigeria and Lebanon, what was dance music like at the time you were over there?
Non existent in Nigeria! however i got the bug for drums that’s for sure. it’s all about the rhythm in Africa. As for Lebanon, i started the dance scene there in the early 90s after the war when i was a promoter, threw many parties and introduced house music in the region. Got MInistry Of Sound Tour for the first time ever, DJs like Anthony Papa and Paul Van Dyk to name a few.
What musical influences inspired you to DJ / Produce?
House & Techno. I’m a music lover, heard practically everyone and have booked many DJs in the past, my ears are stamped with house music. I decided one day to explore my creativity to find out what comes out of me in the studio and here i am still inspired.
Your music has been described as a blend of deep techno with groovy rhythms, how would you describe the music you are trying to make?
Techy and very sexy. Some of it is deep and some of it tough but it’s got that sexy-ness in it even the banging ones can still make you grind from the waist below.
DJing and Producing is a predominantly male industry, has this ever been a challenge and what advice would you give any other female Djs/Producers out there trying to break into the industry?
To have bigger balls! Music speaks for itself at the end of the day, it’s got no gender, no colour and no odor. It’s a feeling. Women or men – if you get that feeling across it will reach everyone and that’s the essence.
Where in the world is your favourite place to play?
Ibiza, it’s the hub of house music.
You have plaudits from Carl Cox who will also be playing South West Four this summer, how does it feel to receive praise from a legend like Coxy?
Amazing and very flattering. He’s the one that picked me up and exposed me to the world. I owe you one Carlito!
The South West Four Weekender is sure to be massive, how excited are you to be playing?
Super excited and really looking forward to playing the Bedrock Area. Last year was unbelievable and to be asked again to play this year with John Digweed and his friends is truly amazing.
Who else on the line up would you like to see play?
(Full line up @ www.southwestfour.com)
John, Carl, Steve and Josh.
What do you think of the current scene in London?
It’s very sad to see the big clubs shut down. It started with Turnmills, The Cross< The End and now Fabric and Matter. A new era of the underground is rising, we’re going back to the original vibe now which is great. Back to warehouse parties and black box venues, it’s very cool.
What is your favourite night club and why?
Space Ibiza. The atmosphere is second to none, people are joined together under one roof all night having it. It’s a ritual.
How are your productions going, any new releases coming up soon to keep an eye out for?
My new EP on INTEC Digital coming out in Sept, already being hammered by the big boys, working on a VIVa MUSIC EP as well, also look out for my Monique Musique release end of the summer.
What are your current top 3 tracks?
1. Nicole Moudaber Stomp That EP INTEC
2. Julian Chaptal Pump Area Remote
3. Kasbah Zoo La Furtiva Se Sienta (The Junkies Remix) Rawthentic Music
What does the future hold in store for Nicole Moudaber?
More music to put out, I’m so inspired at the moment and evolving everyday.
Finally, a message to all those coming to see you at SW4 this summer?
Brace yourself
