Let’s go back to 2006.
I used to hate my job, the dead-end brainless work.
Even more, I used to hate my commute.
An hour by subway what would take 20 minutes by car if I had owned one.
Everyday I walked to the subway, switching lines in town and took a 2nd line to the end.
I dreamed that one day the subway would take me past the last stop, just keep going.
Or maybe I would end up somewhere else, somewhere new.
Music was my salvation, my soundtrack, those two hours each day.
With or without music the commute was a score I listened to countless times.
On two occasions, for posterity, I recorded the commute.
Now it’s 2009 and my life has changed so much.
I look back into the dust of times and accompany a soundtrack to those days of travel.
This was my commute.

The Process: Commute is an experimental concept album about commuting. The album is the length of my commute in 2006. I recorded my commute four times (2 out and 2 back), overlapping all four audio recordings into one 68 minute sound collage. This soundscape became the foundation of the composition and the subtle ambiance heard throughout Commute. Tones were designated to various sounds; watery piano for people & chimes, dulcimer drones for cars, drums for rain & subway tracks, low drones for subway cars, and synths for general ambient noise. The structure was entirely in the hands of the field recording collage. It was my conscious decision however to break Commute up into three sections. Each section represents a different leg of the commute (1 - The walk to the subway / 2 - The ride downtown / 3 - The 2nd line outbound).

The Italian now living in London studied classical guitar and percussion at an early age, before experimenting with computer-based music in the 90s. “Summer Dream” is a deep, beautiful tech house roller. A simple groove drives along to form a canvas on which Rico paints thick massive layers and painstakingly detailed strokes of sonic warmth. The tone and pace to this make it the quintessential Summertime track.

Carmarage Records - My Space

There were times that the “Yunes Single” didn’t look like it would see the light of day. Scheduling issues, and numerous other unforseen problems saw this moving around the Rack & Ruin release schedule on a weekly basis.

Thankfully it all came together in the end, and the new Picayunes single is upon us. This two track offering takes a playful nod back to yesteryear, with it’s two tracks simply entitled “Side-A” and “Side-B”, reminiscent of days gone by with tape singles.

It’s not the only nod to the past, Picayunes sound, although very fresh and interesting, definitely has its roots in a period of 90s indie that many sorely miss. This wouldn’t be a Picayunes review if it didn’t contain at least one Pavement reference, but 37 seconds into the opening track you almost expect Malkmus to jump in.

Last year Glenn Ryszko released his work “4.0 subtle distorted guitar drones” on Resting Bell as well as compilation-tracks for “SOUNDOFSLOWFLOW Vol.1″ from Slow Flow Records and “listen” from duckbay. Now he comes up with his second Resting Bell-release called “Machine”.

“Machine” is a sublime minimal drone work, inspired by abandoned industrial places. Glenn was born in a coal mining area, which was closed down even before he was born. Nevertheless he was surrounded by these old facilities and industrial monuments which inspire him to this creation.

The six tracks on “Machine” mainly consist of field recording and looped environmental sounds and looped tibetan bells. Both elements are processed and arranged with effects and software. Compared to the massive distorted work on “4.0 subtle distorted guitar drones” “Machine” is more minimal, less monumental. It has a really strong hypnotising and repetitive element, minimal drones on multiple layers and it is also a very rhythmic work.

Please enjoy this beautiful release.

Like many before him, girls are the biggest non-musical influence on “A Series of Dark Caves”, so when it was announced that his latest EP was going to be entitled “Animals”, I naively thought that this EP would cover tarsiers, axolotl, and maybe an otter here or there, branching out from his bigger influence.

This niave thought is quickly dispelled, and we are left with a beautiful melancholy driven pop record. In the olden days of 7″ singles, we would have an A side, and a B side. The A side would be “the hit”, the B side would be “the song you didn’t listen to as much as the hit”, with this EP it is hard to say which of these three tracks would be “the hit”, as all have the ingredients to be the tracks that people will be wanting to hear.

This EP may be wildlife free, but I have a suspicion that girls still remain Davids biggest non-music influence.

Williams Park is in St. Petersburg, Florida, United States. It is the city’s first park and encompasses an entire city block between 4th and 3rd Streets North and between 2nd and 1st Avenues North. Founded in 1888 and originally named “City Park,” it was changed to Williams Park in honor of the founder of St. Petersburg, John Constantine Williams Sr.

In 1964, Richard Nixon used the bandstand to speak to a large group gathered in the park on behalf of then presidential candidate Barry Goldwater. Many downtown workers flock to the park in good weather for picnics during their lunch breaks. At one time, the park was surrounded by prestigious department and retail stores. In the past 25 years, most of them have moved away to malls and other areas away from the city center. The bandstand plays a prominent role in the park and one has been there since 1894.

The bandstand is still used for many outdoor concerts during the noon hour and on weekends, but for groups which tend to attract smaller crowds.

The park is also a haven to the city’s homeless population.

“We haven’t much in life, yet we have so much. It is strange how important the small things become. Letters to Kansas City is an ode to H Stewart’s hometown. The songs are written about Kansas City’s neighborhoods, their moods and memories according to H Stewart. The songs were made with a cheap Casio, a used microphone, and a laptop which houses odd programs for sound manipulations. Those things coupled with the memory of home H Stewart create a voiceless album drawing on how little and how much we have in life, and how important it is to be home.”

“Exit To Exist” is experimental music project from Minsk, Belarus. It was created in 2007 by Vitovt & Unsound Of Mind. Music combines several stylistic references with dark ambient in it’s both visions: “proto- + post-”; using quite large list of instrumental equipment. This first demo/album called “Harbours” is recorded as “live” improvisation with few elements of post-production and arrangement. Seven musical pieces are the way to represesent the inner state of their authors to potential listeners, as the special way of transpersonal communication. In evidence, there is some dual analogy, observed through conception based on the sea’s [or ocean... water... harbour... ships... wrecker...] imagery, which evokes truly powerful atmosphere of raoring chaos on one hand and correspond with deep estrangement and melancholy of human being on the other.

Having such a passion for bass Poros bass leads the way to his admirable world of senses. Every note is played respectfully every chord has a smell, every beat a taste. You can sense different worlds in harmony. And all the other sounds increase this sense of perfume, of exotic nights, of longing for something. Carefully noises and sounds are placed in such a way that brings us closer and closer to desire.

The last time Jason the Swamp released a Rack & Ruin album it ended up featuring on quite a few “Best of 2008″ lists. It’s nice to see him back here, and aiming to repeat that feature with the glorious “As Is The Sun” album.

Jason’s trademark laid back fuzzy vibe is dusted off and appears once again (in full effect), although unlike his other releases, “As is The Sun” is definitely an album that could have easily been one track, and it is thirteen. The tracks flow effortlessly into one another, and in no time the 38 minutes have passed, and once again you are left amazed at how easy he makes this “music making” look.

“As Is The Sun” is also available to purchase on CD directly from Jason, and it has the added bonus of containing five extra tracks, so you can continue this gorgeous journey for a little while longer.
